Molecular Genetics labGenetic testing

Molecular Genetics Laboratory is a core laboratory located in Kuwait Medical Genetic Center (KMGC).  The lab performs genetic testing on DNA extracted from a variety of tissues like: blood, saliva, skin biopsy…etc. These tests are performed using different techniques including: polymerase chain reaction (PCR), sequencing, restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP), multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification (MLPA), and strip assays. These tests allow us to detect a variety of mutations in the genome of each individual. Genetic testing is crucial especially for individuals with a known family history of specific pathological mutations. The tests allow us to determine the genotype of individuals, whether they are carriers of mutations or affected. Accordingly, future plans can put together by our genetic counselors for disease management if possible or to see if preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) is the best option to conceive healthy children.

The Molecular Genetics Laboratory provides testing for over 150 genetic diseases, some of which:

  • Beta-Thalassemia,Alpha-Thalassemia, Sickle cell anemia
  • Fragile X, Cystic Fibrosis
  • Y microdeletions, Recurrent Pregnancy Loss (RPL)
  • DMD, SMA, NF1
  • Cancers
  • Mitochondrial diseases
  • Microdeletion syndromes
